Home-Made Wet Wipes

Sylvia is always looking at ways to replace her current products with ones that are eco-friendly, sustainable and work as well as the one she’s exchanging them for. They also have to have the added bonus of costing a lot less than manufactured products. Using all-natural ingredients are better for our bodies as we cannot process all the chemicals that are added to everyday products.

Wet Wipes made up over 90% of the material causing sewer blockages that Water UK investigated in 2017.

Wipes can also find their way into the oceans and cause long term damage to sea life and the fragile marine environment.

Like so many other disposable products, Wet Wipes contain plastic and aren’t as harmless as you may think. They contribute to the ‘fatbergs’ that are cropping up in many city sewers as well as lining the river beds of many rivers around the world.

Sylvia has cleaned her house using essential oils and natural ingredients for the last few years and she has consciously tried to cut down on plastics and toxic ingredients.

So here is her recipe for home-made Wet Wipes for cleaning your home, made with pure and natural essential oils and ingredients.

Ingredients

These homemade wipes can be used in place of store-bought wipes and are suitable for cleaning and dusting most of the surfaces in your home.

If you’re using paper towels, then you’ll need to use the thicker towels which are often labelled as ‘strong’ or ‘extra strong’. If you want to make reusable wipes, an old cotton tee shirt, for example, cut into squares, can replace the kitchen roll and has the added bonus of being washable, as well as being reusable. If you decide to make your cloth wipes, then you will need a large container (a large Kilner or mason jar) into which you can crumple the fabric before adding the liquid.

1 roll os paper towels - extra strong
250ml cooled, boiled water
125ml white vinegar
5 drops Lemon oil
5 drops Lavender oil
5 drops Melaleuca, Purify or On Guard oil
1 airtight, oblong container, large enough to hold the paper towels, without creasing.

Method

Cut the roll of paper towels in half.

Mix the ingredients and pour over the paper towels. Put the lid on and shake to moisten the towels.

The Verdict

Sylvia says:

“These Wet Wipes are a huge success with everyone in the home and I keep a box of them on my kitchen surface as well as in my bathroom. If you use the strong or extra strong paper towels, they’re durable as well as smelling fresh and clean. I had some reservations about this recipe as I thought the paper towels would dissolve into a soggy heap, but I have used them all this month and they have been fine. You can use any oils of your choice to scent the wipes but do not omit the Melaleuca, Purify or On Guard as it helps to ensure that they do not go mouldy. Well worth a try!”
